The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
