Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such treatments must be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
